ROLLING ELECTRICAL OUTAGES

Energy Conservation Tips | Home Conservation Tips | Energy Conservation Program

The potential for rolling electrical outages will continue as long as statewide energy shortages exist. Since energy conservation can significantly help avert outages by reducing the demand for energy, it is important that we conserve energy at every opportunity.

What are Rolling Electrical Outages?
A rolling electrical outage (or "rolling blackout") is when the power is shut off in a specific area due to an energy shortage. The power is turned back on when additional power is obtained or the power is turned off in another area.

How long can outages last?
Typically, power outages can last 30 to 90 minutes.

Are outages controlled?
Although uncontrollable outages can occur, rolling outages are organized and planned when the electricity supply is forecast to fall below State reserve levels. The CAISO (California Independent System Operator) issues public alerts and energy curtailments in the form of a three-stage progressive emergencies. Stage 1= Peak period power is needed; Stage 2 =reserves below 5%; Stage 3 = reserves below 1½% and outages are likely.

What should you do if a rolling electrical outages occur?

• Stay calm! Your safety and the safety of the public are of primary concern.

• Only call 9-1-1 if a life-threatening emergency occurs.

• Keep a flashlight and extra batteries at your desk. Do not use candles.

• Keep work areas clear of clutter to allow for safe exit, if directed.

• Employees should maintain normal work hours, unless directed otherwise.

• Follow emergency preparedness and exit guidelines, including using the stairs.

• Some telephones will not work without electrical power.

• Keep your body cool by drinking plenty of water, avoiding caffeine, and eating light meals.

• Drive carefully since traffic signals may not work. Consider intersections as 4-way stops.

Make a difference by conserving energy!
